This is an opportunity to join “the Google of Chemistry” in a newly established position. As CAS continues to grow, they recognize the need to restructure their technology functions to continue its business trajectory.

 

This new position leads the SciFinder Discovery Platform and Life Sciences teams from a leadership and people perspective. In the past, these functional areas operated as individual delivery units. This position brings all SciFinder and Life Sciences related products together with the goal of creating synergy, optimizing operations, reducing friction, and streamlining communication. This position is highly collaborative in nature. This person will work with other CAS business divisions to understand priorities, position Technology to best address these priorities and commitments, and serve as the primary escalation point. This position will report to the Senior Director and be instrumental in providing leadership, making staffing decisions, overseeing product technology roadmap execution and achievement of deliverables.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Director of Application Technology is responsible for the operations of SciFinder Discovery Platform and Life Sciences products that leverage CAS scientific content.They will actively partner with the Senior Director, Application Technology, to provide a cohesive operational approach to the suite of products.

 

Expectations of the Assistant Director of Application Technology will include:

  • Own Technology execution and business commitments for SciFinder Discovery Platform and Life Sciences application portfolios
  • Be a consistent thread and a single point of contact for all business partners. Establish cooperative relationships across business and technology functions with respect to systems, projects, processes, and teams
  • Communicate effectively with business partners
  • Empower, enable, and partner with Technical Managers and Product Technical Leads to help them accomplish their goals
  • Partner with Senior Director Application Technology on operations direction and execution considering operational excellence, continuous improvement, and creativity to maximize team impact
  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, and quality to meet business needs
  • Work closely with other members of the technology management team to assure alignment of technology activities with business commitments
  • Report team plans, projects, performance, and related matters to executive leadership team
  • Assist technology and finance in developing cost allocation and budgeting
  • Provide cross-functional coordination of resources to deliver against the technology project portfolio
  • Oversee related vendor contracts and hold vendors accountable to meet their obligations
  • Successfully translate corporate objectives into team and individual goals
  • Evaluate impact of business and technology trends on strategic direction of assigned products
  • Build and oversee a department of 2-5 direct reports and 50 staff consisting of full-time employees and contractors
  • Additional leadership responsibilities include quarterly evaluations, hiring and mentoring staff, and providing both training and career growth opportunities for direct reports

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

The Assistant Director of Application Technology must be an innovative leader capable of driving large-scale transformational change. S/He must be able to effectively motivate, challenge and inspire individual staff commitment, while identifying strengths and areas of need. Other professional experiences include:

 

  • Requires 15 years of highly relevant experience, advanced business knowledge and general management and leadership capability to lead business or functional teams related to developing critical customer-facing, technology applications. S/He should possess broader practical experience across multiple professional disciplines within the organization, combining theory, past practical experience and the organization’s business practices.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a technology management position. Prior experience leading managers with direct reports is a plus
  • Publishing industry experience preferred
  • Substantive experience leading application technology and delivery to include:
    • Managing large, complex ecosystems
    • Experience with customer focused delivery
    • Experience with cloud computing and multi-tiered application architecture
  • Experience with customer facing product development, excellent collaborative skills, and strong analytical reasoning
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, and work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience managing distributed, onshore, and offshore teams
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact across the organization and work with staff at all levels
  • Solid leadership skills with the ability to influence others
  • Develop plans and deliver results in a fast-changing business environment
  • Ability to express ideas effectively in both verbal and written formats
  • Passion for quality and customer experience/success

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems or related field or equivalent, relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred. Six Sigma and Project Management Professional certifications preferred.
