This is an opportunity to play a key role with a best-in-class publisher in STM publishing.

The Columbus, OH - based Publications Software Engineering (PSE) Department of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is seeking a Business Relationship Manager (BRM) to drive success for our internal clients in the divisions we support. The BRM will serve as a senior-level, strategic business partner who shares ownership for technology/business strategy and ensures business value results. The BRM will work with Columbus-based Publications, Finance, and Membership leaders as well as their Washington-based counterparts to ensure that PSE can anticipate, plan for, and deliver solutions that drive value and revenue streams in their respective areas.

The BRM will be responsible for cultivating strong relationships, understanding the business value of new IT project requests, advising business partners on technical implications and solution options, IT portfolio management, and supporting senior members of the team in achieving desired results through the delivery of technology solutions. The ideal candidate has a strong background in relationship management, consulting, or business process improvement within a technical discipline.  Business Analyst, Business Process Improvement and Project Management duties will be required as part of this position.

To these ends, the primary responsibilities of the BRM are as follows:

  1. Build and manage relationships with internal and external users to ensure awareness of their short- and long-term needs and priorities for IT support.
  2. Manage client expectations through effective communications that include skilled listening to understand their challenges, and articulate sharing of IT-related opportunities and challenges that both educate and inform.
  3. Drive technology and business process innovation within the Publications division and across the organization, including leading or highly contributing to cross-divisional initiatives.
  4. Engage as a project manager, including evaluating, executing project efforts and progress against joint strategic plans and objectives, escalating risks as appropriate.
  5. Engage as a Business Analyst including leading process improvements and requirements activities.
  6.  Participate with or lead the IT quality assurance program, ensuring a well-functioning QA process that may involve third party vendors.
  7. Build and manage relationships with external vendors to pursue ACS best interests and act as an advocate on behalf of ACS.
  8. Ensure that IT leadership is knowledgeable about each business unit’s priorities, objectives, and timelines to ensure proper resourcing.
  9. Demonstrate creativity and awareness concerning industry trends and advances as they relate to changing client needs.
  10. Oversee prioritization and delivery of solutions for business systems.
  11. Lead and direct work of staff and contractors both locally and globally.


Position Requirements:

  1. College degree in Business or Computer Science (information systems, engineering, computer science, finance, accounting) preferred; combination of education and experience in lieu of the preferred degree will be considered.
  2. Expertise in the application software development process, including waterfall SDLC, agile development (confluence and jira knowledge a plus)
  3. Expertise with software quality assurance processes using established methods and best practices
  4. Understanding of IT portfolio management and evaluating project criteria on ROI, strategic alignment, cost savings and suitability
  5. Strong leadership and negotiation skills.
  6. Highly effective communications skills for interacting with internal clients, vendors, developers, and users.
  7. Leadership ability and a willingness to take ownership of projects and tasks.
  8. Six Sigma, Kaizen or PMP certifications are a plus but not required.


Required Experience:

  1. Minimum of 10 years of experience in an IT function or publishing including in a project manager or business analyst or comparable role.
  2. Experience in business process improvement and consulting preferred but not required.
  3. Experience in defining, executing, and leading comprehensive test plans for complex software systems, preferably business management or manufacturing applications.
  4. Experience interfacing and communicating with senior level management.
  5. Experience analyzing and solving complex business problems and background in business process improvement.
  6. Experience in publishing highly preferred but not required





This position will be primarily based in the D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
