Division and Unit Overview


The Sales and Marketing Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing sales programs for the ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent in this is analyzing all results and recommending future direction for the marketing and positioning of ACS Publications’ products within the chemical/scientific community marketplace. The Marketing Department is committed to building a better online, purchasing, and reading experience, as well as improving the scholarly research and communications environment for both the customer and the end user. Key constituents include institutional librarian administrators, corporate librarians, authors, reviewers, ACS members, editors, and the range of end-users (subscribers and non-subscribers).


The Marketing Department is tasked with developing ongoing conversations and strengthening relationships to instigate positive brand recognition and ultimately increase sales and revenue for an extensive portfolio of journals, eBooks and other digital products. A core group within the Marketing Department is the Content Marketing and Lead Generation group, responsible for the marketing of over 70 journals, a portfolio of eBooks, new digital products, the society’s premiere blog ACS Axial ( and the division’s marketing automation system.


Position Summary


An organized and proactive self-starter, the Associate Marketing Manager will work closely with, and under the direction of, the Senior Marketing Manager to support the journals marketing team with the implementation and execution of marketing activities.


The Associate Marketing Manager will also take direct responsibility for a small cluster of journals for which they will work with editorial colleagues to develop and execute effective marketing strategies and campaigns to increase submissions, drive usage, and generate awareness. 


The successful candidate will be keen to develop their knowledge and expertise in STM marketing, seeking to learn about ACS journals and their related markets. They will strive to develop their strategic marketing expertise to actively grow the reach of their activities through marketing channels.


The position is responsible for executing campaigns across the marketing mix, with a focus on email and digital activity and exploring innovative opportunities to utilize new media.  The successful candidate should be able to establish and seek to develop strong working relationships with a variety of colleagues inside and outside the organization, to reach target audiences with accurate and targeted messaging.


Position Accountabilities:


  • Collaborates with colleagues across teams to implement marketing activities designed to grow submissions, usage, and general awareness of a selection of journals.
  • Supports the team with exhibit coordination, including: arranging ship lists, coordinating updates and production of conference specific displays and print and digital promotional materials.
  • Tracks effectiveness of campaign tactics to provide regular reporting and inform future campaigns.
  • Works under manager’s supervision to directly manage the marketing of a small list of journals, including developing and executing marketing strategies and tactics in support of the journals’ goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates with internal and external Editorial colleagues to inform marketing campaign priorities, strategies and tactics.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to inform copy creation and messaging.
  • Travels to support exhibit strategy at chemistry conferences locally and overseas, as planned.
  • Assists in execution of general marketing projects throughout the year.
  • Writes copy for social posts, blogs, email, ads and other channels as needed.
  • Supports pay-per-click, email marketing, online advertising, and other digital marketing programs, including webinars, as needed.

Required Experience:
Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge
Bachelor’s degree and min. 2 years of related experience. Must have knowledge of current and emerging marketing practices. An understanding of the STM Publishing environment would be beneficial.
Excellent organizational and time management skills required. Ability to implement activities outlined in integrated marketing plans. Some experience of marketing planning would be useful. Exceptional writing and communication skills, ability to work within an international team environment, and attention to detail required.
