Division and Unit Overview

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific membership association. Its mission is to “advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people”. ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society’s programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise.

 

Position Summary

ACS Publications, by virtue of its products and wide-ranging peer review, touches hundreds of thousands of active researchers. Our focus has been on their research outputs, not the skills and techniques required for researchers to excel professionally. The Division’s primary products and revenue center have traditionally been peer-reviewed journals that are widely disseminated through online subscriptions, receiving the most downloads and citations in chemistry. ACS Publications has a significant footprint in the global academy: 3,500 institutions from high schools to teaching hospitals subscribe and use our content services or seek to enhance their professional standing though our publications and events. To further enhance the impact of the Division, the New Product Innovation team is tasked with developing and launching new products, services, tools, or solutions consistent with the Societal mission to provide indispensable information.

 

The Junior Developer will be part of a technical team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a target-state architecture framework that supports near and long-term business and technology objectives. The successful candidate will assist in implementing and maintaining product specific UI/UX designs, ETL processes, API integrations, data pipelines, and performance scaling on the technical framework. The Junior Developer will collaborate with the internal team (Enterprise/Solution Architect, Developers, Project Manager(s), Business Analyst(s)), UI/UX Designers) as well as third-party vendors; all of whom will be building and maintaining the technical framework and the NPI products that the framework will support. The successful candidate should have practical knowledge of both scrum/agile and waterfall project management methodologies and must be willing to be directed and mentored by more senior technical resources. This position reports to the Technology Manager, New Product Innovation.

 

Position Accountabilities

  • Iteratively define and develop the technical architecture framework and NPI product suite using the latest web technologies and software design best practices.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into high quality code and reusable components.
  • Deliver software releases on schedule, from conception through to product delivery.  
  • Support test automation and continuous improvement of NPI products.
  • Collaborate across multiple internal and external teams and cultures.
  • AI/ML knowledge a plus.
     

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

 

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
  • 1+ years’ technical experience.
  • Understanding of full stack development concepts, SPA, Angular, React, TypeScript, JavaScript, JSON, Bootstrap, Web APIs, data processing, BI reporting, Java as well as emerging and/or open sources technologies.  Cloud architecture a plus.
  • Passion for technology; desre to monitor trends and developments and apply cutting-edge technology to product development.
  • Knowledge of softwre development lifecycles as well as scrum/agile and waterfall development methodologies.  
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 5% of the time.

 

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
