The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) publishes a weekly topical magazine (C&EN) and more than 70 peer-reviewed journals focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. The Division has domestic facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, India, and China. The Division’s Publications Sales department manages regional sales representatives as well as contracted distribution relationships across the globe servicing customers in over 100 countries. With all of the challenges that come with delivering our expanding product set to a growing client base, we are in search of a Business Analyst to join our high-performing team in Columbus, OH.

The Business Analyst (BA) will work under the direction of the Assistant Director, Business Analytics supporting primarily the Global Sales, Operations and Marketing teams.  The BA will also play a role in developing and expanding the Publications Divisions Enterprise Data needs. The BA will contribute to the comprehensive support of all activities relating to sales, revenue operations and marketing in an effort to accelerate and expand sales and control expenses. This includes data analysis around pricing, customer behaviors and account performance.  The position will also work closely with the group’s management team in the area of budgets/forecasting and departmental performance management.  Additionally, this position will provide analysis & modeling of business data to assist stakeholders in making informed business decisions and provide opportunity recognition. The Business Analyst (BA) will also work as a liaison to the IT department on business requirements and data needs.  The position will help in developing and implementing data delivery and visualization tools to end users. He/she will support in the gathering, documentation and design of key business definitions, measures, and standards.

Primary duties will include the following:

1.            Leverages experience with Peoplesoft GL and Query, Hyperion, Essbase, NVision, and Smartview to build and run reports.

2.            Applies knowledge of AP and GL concepts to analyze reports.

3.            Supports the preparation of the annual budget process for the Publications Sales & Marketing organization.

4.            Assimilates, validates & analyzes business data in order to help senior management make informed business decisions.

5.            Responsible for testing of proper controls.

6.            Responds to ad-hoc requests pertaining to data or informational analysis.

7.            Responsible for compiling weekly/monthly management reports and information. This includes improving upon current processes.

8.            Tracks and evaluates results, incorporates historical trends, and interprets results into clear and concise management reporting.

9.            Performs continual data validation and creates process/procedural improvements to insure data integrity.

10.          Participates in the development of systems and tools used for business monitoring and data analysis. This includes visualization and end user deliverability.


Required Skills

1.            Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field or equivalent experience; M.B.A. or comparable advanced degree preferred.

2.            A strong financial background with the ability to perform complex financial modeling, sensitivity analysis, and financial risk assessment.

3.            Strong conceptual knowledge of Peoplesoft GL and Query, Hyperion, Essbase, NVision, and Smartview with the aptitude to quickly learn and apply these applications in the context required.

4.            Excellent communications, interpersonal and project leadership skills required. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office; standard business systems software skills; and an aptitude to learn and effectively use new and/or proprietary systems and applications is required.

5.            Level of confidence to perform tasks with minimal supervision.

6.            A quick learner who retains training, builds on experience, and is able to exercise good situational judgment.

7.            A comfortable multi-tasker who is able to adjust to changing priorities and respond to time-critical scenarios in a dynamic environment.

8.            Demonstrated ability to work effectively at various levels within an organization and in a team environment.

9.            Desirable but not required, proficiency or understanding of relational databases, data visualization and analytical tools with the ability to provide self-service data analytics.


Required Experience

1.            A minimum of 0-5 years of relevant professional experience in a comparable role.

2.            Experience in AP and GL analysis.


This position will be primarily based in the D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
