CAS is currently seeking a Scientific Information Selector. The position will be based in our headquarters in Columbus, OH.

Position Summary


The Scientific Information Selector applies scientific expertise, problem solving capabilities, and relevant language skills to help build CAS’s world-class collection of scientific data.  They leverage their expertise to curate high-quality research data from patent authorities, journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings and dissertations published in 180 countries and in more than 50 languages.  The incumbent may also provide scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions.  A Scientific Information Selector will review and analyze a document to understand the chemical novelty, author intent and subject matter, and determining whether the content and format of the document is suitable for inclusion in CAS databases.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Review chemical literature (patent and non-patent) to determine if the reported science is appropriate for inclusion in CAS databases.
  • Utilize customized tools and policies to process documents available in varying formats. 
  • Classify the literature into chemistry domains based on the reported science by assigning appropriate CA sections for subsequent analysis
  • As needed, translate Japanese, Korean and/or Chinese document titles into English.
  • Complete all tasks within pre-determined time frames, supporting the goal of providing CAS customers access to published scientific literature in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate through training, knowledge sharing, and project work.
  • Learn and deploy quality standards to all completed work and assess the quality of CAS databases.
  • Assist with projects that affect production and CAS database building.


Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry or related science with strong Inorganic, Organic, Polymer, Applied, Biochemistry or Physical/Analytical Chemistry emphasis.
  • Ability to read technical documents in non-English languages (especially Japanese, Korean and/or Chinese) is preferred.
  • Ability to rapidly scan documents for chemical content and make quick and accurate decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and time-critical environment
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • Solutions focused, continuous improvement, and growth mindset.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications. Aptitude and interest for learning and using various web-based and/or proprietary computer applications including, but not limited to video conferencing, instant messaging, and document sharing software.
  • Ability to proactively collaborate, communicate and share knowledge with peers and diverse backgrounds.
