CAS is currently seeking a Synthetic Organic Chemist. This position will be based in our headquarters in Columbus, OH.

As an integral part of the Content Operations team, you will leverage your education and specialized training to curate high-quality research data from patent and journal literatures to build the most current and complete digital environment for scientific insight and discovery, benefitting the whole scientific community. Position Summary

The Synthetic Organic Chemist applies scientific expertise, analytical skills, problem solving capabilities, and relevant language skills to help build CAS’s world-class collection of scientific data. They leverage their expertise to curate high-quality research data from patent authorities, journals, technical reports, books, conference proceedings and dissertations published in 180 countries and in more than 50 languages. The incumbent may also provide scientific and content knowledge, capabilities, insights, and solutions for other CAS functions.

 

Specific Responsibilities

The Synthetic Organic Chemist curates, collects, and analyzes the valuable data disclosed in scientific publications utilizing CAS indexing policies and their expertise. Leveraging their technical knowledge and applicable language skills, they extract key insights and build the CAS Content Collection. Specific responsibilities include reviewing documents and indexing structures in a production environment. knowledge of structural descriptions and naming conventions of chemical substances is preferred. 

 

Job Requirements:      

  • An advanced degree in Organic Chemistry or related scientific field. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of related work experience.
  • Excellent scientific reading comprehension and writing skills.
  • Strong learning agility including ability to quickly learn and apply complex scientific concepts and policies and technology tools. Ability to apply learnings to new situations and glean relevant insights.
  • Solutions focused, continuous improvement, and growth mindset.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications. Aptitude and interest for learning and using various web-based and/or proprietary computer applications including, but not limited to video conferencing, instant messaging, and document sharing software.
  • Ability to proactively collaborate, communicate and share knowledge with peers with diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong work ethic.
