CAS is currently seeking a Sr Manager: Scientific Information. This position will be based in our headquarters in Columbus, OH.

Position Summary

The Senior Manager, Scientific Information is responsible for tactical execution of initiatives, programs, projects, and operations that deliver both short-term and long-term results to the business. This role oversees a unit of 2-4 direct report managers who each lead a team of 10-25 direct reports and 1-5 individual contributor direct reports. The role reports directly to the Assistant Director, Scientific Information -Life Sciences.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Assures unit direction and resource deployment to achieve division production, quality, currency, and other goals related to CAS scientific database building activities.
  2. Guides and develops managers in creating positive culture, performance accountability, employee engagement, and coaching and development of their teams.
  3. Fosters ongoing development and increases capability of the unit.
  4. Leads the evaluation and implementation of workflow, technology, and content enhancement initiatives in collaboration with the Life Sciences leadership.

  

 

 

Position Accountabilities

  •  Leads direction and goal achievements of a  Scientific Analysis and Insights unit. Develops and manages unit’s plans, goals, performance metrics, and budget in alignment with department and division strategic goals and leadership. Makes effective and efficient use of available resources to achieve goals. Ensures unit’s work is performed to meet CAS’ challenging standards for productivity, quality, currency, and other goals of the organization, enabling CAS databases and products to remain world-class. Collaborates with peers and leadership to establish and achieve operational and strategic goals. Supports shared vision and defines clear roles and objectives. Oversees progress and inspires high performance for the unit.

 

  • Manages talent and culture using best practices. Cultivates positive, respectful environment in which people desire to work. Inspires employee engagement and high performance, appreciates, and recognizes efforts and results, coaches and provides feedback. Fosters career development, builds bench strength. Enhances culture across teams led personally and among direct and indirect reports, and across the Content Operations organizationManages performance. Coaches and guides people managers in managing talent, culture, engagement, and performance. Directly manages 1-5 direct reports including 2-4 M1 people managers who each manage 10-25 individual contributors.

 

  • Establishes and continuously improves processes. Identifies opportunities for improvement, obtains buy-in, and manages execution of strategic and tactical plans that support increased organizational effectiveness and boosts operational efficiencies. Identifies and implements improved procedures.

 

  • Mitigates risk and facilitates problem solving. Exercises good judgment, discerns the action needed, leverages analytical skills, makes good decisions independently, escalates issues appropriately, proactively updates and/or involves leadership, identifies, and implements improved procedures. Maintains confidentiality.

 

  • Identifies needs and implements projects and action plans that benefit the unit, division, and CAS. Collaborates within unit and across departments and divisions. Manages and leads programs or projects; provides leadership and sponsorship to others who are managing projects.

 

  • Models collaborative leadership and ensures alignment across diverse stakeholders. Establishes and safeguards partnership and alignment across various groups and Divisions in support of normal operations, strategic initiatives, projects, and transformation. Works across Scientific Analysis and Insights departments within Content Operations Division with optimized and aligned processes, practices, policies, tools, technologies, and culture. 

 

  • Champions cultural and other changes using best practices and in tandem with CO leadership and Human Resources. Embeds skills, changes mindsets, and builds culture to that enable positive culture and improve change agility. Ensures team grows knowledge and ability about unit, department, Content Operations, and CAS. Continuously expands knowledge of CAS strategies, goals, and products. Continuously improves own, unit, department, and divisions’ knowledge of operations, processes, database content, procedures, science, including, but not limited to,  current policies, practices, technology, and information affecting the unit/department/division/enterprise.

 

  • Establishes and sustains customer experience top-of-mind for leaders and individual contributors. Leads team in ways that positively affect customers and our CAS brand.

 

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience/Competencies/Technological Knowledge

  • Graduate degree in a life sciences-related or business-related field desired. Bachelor’s degree in a life sciences or chemistry related field with extensive project and people leadership accepted.
  • 12 years’ experience in information management industry, technology, or related scientific background.
  • 3+ years of direct people management or related experience.
  • Knowledge of Content Operations processes and CAS content, or comparable external experience with science-related solutions, information/intellectual property, or transformation in related industry.
  • Proven ability to lead a portfolio of projects and work across the organization.
  • Experienced leadership success through engaging, coaching, developing, and inspiring high performance.
  • Developer of talent and capabilities: Identifies and cultivates essential skills and attributes to maximize individual contribution and engagement and ensure right people, right skills, and right time.
  • Strong communication, organizational savvy, interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

 

While performing the responsibilities of the position, the worker may exert up to 20 pounds of force frequently or 50 pounds occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The worker is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands. The worker is required to talk and hear. The worker is often required to use their wrists, hands and/or fingers, to handle, grasp or feel; making substantial movements.  The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
