Position Summary

CAS is currently seeking a Software Engineer.  This position will be located in our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.



  • Software Engineer is responsible for supporting technology exploration and solution development for the purpose of building chemical and reaction databases that empower CAS proprietary chemical search technologies. This role encompasses developing, deploying and operating software solutions to acquire digital content, persist and version it in content repositories, parse the content metadata and deliver it for scientific review and curation by CAS experts.
  • This position requires advanced full stack development capabilities (primarily in Java) including all stages of the software development lifecycle (SDLC):  requirements definition, design, implementation, testing, build, deploy and production operations.  This includes expertise in source code management (Git/Gerritt) and build/deploy techniques.
  • Candidate will join a small team of 4 to 5 software engineers.  It is desirable that the candidate be a technical leader on the team.




  • 4-year degree in computer science, engineering, informatics, or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of professional software development experience
  • Experience in a DevOps role is desired



  • Proficiency in the Java programming language and object-oriented design
  • Full stack development capabilities
  • Comfortable in Linux/Unix environments
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Kshell/Bash/Python/Perl/Tcl-Tk
  • Experience with relational database systems (primarily Oracle), database schemas and SQL is desired
  • Experience and knowledge of online publishing and related systems and technologies is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical solutions and articulate business outcomes to science, business and technology audience
  • Strong communication, organizational savvy, interpersonal skills
  • Innovates and continuously improves; focuses on areas of highest potential
