The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) publishes a weekly topical magazine (C&EN) and more than 60 peer-reviewed journals (and growing) focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. The Division has domestic facilities in Washington, D.C. and Columbus OH, as well as worldwide operations in a growing number of international locations including but not limited to the UK, Singapore, India, and China.

The Division’s Global Production Operations (GPO) department based in Columbus manages all aspects of the editing, production, and web posting of peer-reviewed papers accepted for publication across the portfolio. With all of the challenges that come with delivering an expanding product set to an expanding client set, we are in search of a Technical Editor to join our high-performing team in Columbus, OH.

ACS Technical Editors perform technical editing of manuscripts for publication in chemistry journals and other products. This is a production editing role for which both quality and quantity standards must be consistently achieved after training is complete. Primary daily tasks include:

1.            Using a value-added and analytical decision-making approach, edit manuscripts ensuring clarity of scientific content.

2.            Applying ACS editing style and proofreading for correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and general readability.

3.            Editing manuscripts using desktop editing and markup software.

Additional responsibilities include participation in the coordination of tasks for journals and other products, communication with internal colleagues and external customers to resolve problems or questions about manuscripts, and assistance with general journal operation activities as assigned.

Required Skills:

In addition to a 4-year degree in a scientific or technical field from an accredited college or university, the following skills are required:

1.            Knowledge of chemical terminology and procedures.

2.            Knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

3.            Proficiency with everyday computer usage and the aptitude to quickly learn and apply off-the-shelf and proprietary software required for the editing process.

4.            Adept with interpersonal relations, communications and problem solving.

5.            Ability to work in a production environment in which quantity and quality metrics are monitored.

6.            Available to work a full-time, minimum 40 hour per week schedule on-site during core working hours (7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) with the flexibility to work occasional hours over the minimum on an as-needed basis in response to operational requirements.

Required Experience:

1.            Familiarity with ACS editing style and knowledge of scientific publishing production process are preferred but not required.

2.            The equivalent of 1 year of experience reviewing and editing scientific and technical writing in a publishing environment and/or in support of research.


This position will be primarily based in the Columbus, OH (or applicable) office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
