Background: The Office of Sustainable Development advances sustainability-related initiatives at the American Chemical Society (ACS). The Office oversees the execution of the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future. The initiatives of the latter include convening the community around sustainability topics, setting up a grant program, creating an online sustainability portal, and educational outreach. Under the Office of Sustainable Development is the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® (GCI) whose mission is to catalyze and enable the implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering throughout the global chemistry enterprise and the ACS. The Institute focuses its efforts in four key areas: advancing science and research, integrating green chemistry into higher education, catalyzing industrial implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering, and supporting environmental justice initiatives. In addition, the Office supports ACS advocacy efforts for implementation of green chemistry throughout the chemistry enterprise. Some of the key initiatives of the GCI include an annual conference, summer school, student awards, educational resource development, industry roundtables, and communications. Both the GCI and the Office of Sustainable Development arempart of the ACS’s Division of Scientific Advancement.

 


Position Summary 
The position reports to the Director of Sustainable Development. The Assistant Director is responsible for implementing and sustaining green and sustainable chemistry initiatives and programs in all areas of the Institute’s work (education, industry, science/research, equity and policy). The incumbent will support the ACS GCI programs through meaningful and solutions oriented interactions with internal and external stakeholders aimed at:
(i) Coordination of the professional development initiatives of the GCI.
(ii) Strategic engagements with roundtable members of the GCI, including existing and 
strategic expansions to new areas, such as startups.
(iii) Coordination of the Green Chemistry Challenge Awards.
(iv) Developing new initiatives that intersect green chemistry and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 
Solutions will include collaborations with other ACS Divisions including Publications, Chemical Abstracts Services, Membership, Education, and others. Program support focuses on meetings relevant to the Green Chemistry Institute such as the Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, ACS national meetings, and roundtables. 

 

Required Education, Skills and Attributes:

  • Ph.D. with 7+ years of experience.
  • Chemist or engineer who is passionate about implementation of green chemistry and engineering throughout the chemical enterprise and well-entrenched in the green chemistry community
  • Engaging instructor, capable of delivering presentations, workshops and organizing symposia
  • Has industry experience in implementing green and sustainable chemistry and engineering
  • Capable of excellent organization and administrative management, as well as time management
  • Self-starter and problem-solver with a focus on developing programs that result in impact on the chemistry community
  • Extensive publication record 
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Excellent people skills, with demonstrated ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders, including technical and industrial  professionals. 
  • Comfortable with technology, willing to troubleshoot IT systems (virtual meeting platforms, finance systems, etc.).

Division

Position Summary

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
