Position Summary

CAS is currently seeking a Data Scientist.  This position will be located in our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field. Advanced degree is preferred. A degree in Science is preferred.

3+ years of experience performing statistical models, machine learning, and data analysis (prediction, classification, clustering, time series forecasting, regression models, etc.)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate value and benefits to external customers and internal stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to translate complicated models into actionable business insights.

Attention to detail, time management, strong multi-tasking and problem solving skills.

Proven ability to learn and expand in a fast-paced environment.

Two or more of the following technical requirements.

Experience using statistical computer languages (R, Python, SQL, etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets.

Experience working with and creating data architectures.

Knowledge of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and deep learning toolkits (CNTK, TensorFlow, etc.)

Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with their applications.

Experience visualizing and presenting data for stakeholders using Tableau, Periscope, Business Objects, D3, ggplot, etc.

Duties:

Work with internal functions including IT, marketing, sales, etc. to establish a content analytics and products & services development process.

Standardize a data analytics end-to-end process including methodology of business rules for content preparation with fast iterations, data integration of internal and external content, data cleansing and wrangling, data extraction/transformation/loading (ETL), data discovery of trends/patterns/relationships, data interpretation, hypothesis formulation and testing, and trends/relationship prediction.

Understand customer’s business problems and illustrate business insights to promote CAS brand and thought leadership in the market and develop products & services offering by extracting meaningful business insights and recommending critical business solutions to guide customers in making data driven business decisions.

Work with internal and external customers solving their business problems and deliver high quality products and services.

The Senior Portfolio Analyst is responsible for the reporting and analysis of editorial data to ensure the success of the overall journal program in a data-driven environment. S/he will work closely with other Journal Publications Group staff to identify innovative data-driven solutions to the evolving portfolio’s needs, while monitoring portfolio performance on an ongoing basis. Responsibilities include data collection, analysis, and reporting to internal stakeholders on existing product performance, conducting market research and development of new journal and closely related product opportunities, and leading development efforts around data reliability and scalability. The incumbent should be able to obtain, organize, and synthesize data from different types of sources and at significantly varying scales for subsequent analysis. S/he will be passionate about data and applying analytical methods to answer critical business questions and make recommendations based on the data at hand. The incumbent reports to the Senior Manager, Editorial Business Intelligence & Analytics.

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Ongoing portfolio analysis and performance
    • Independently collect, clean, organize, and report on in-depth data and trends, collaborating closely with other analytics teams in the organization as needed. Synthesize and visualize analytic findings for consumption by stakeholders and customers in the form of dashboards, reports, white papers and/or presentations.
    • Apply statistical tests and analysis to evaluate data sets and metrics for decision-making suitability and properly frame the results to key stakeholders.
    • Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and/or extend the capabilities of the EBI&A team to collect or analyze data with scalability, accuracy and data governance in mind.
    • Coordinate and distribute detailed monthly and annual reports related to portfolio and market performance.
  2. Special projects in support of portfolio and product development
    • Represent the EBI&A team on cross-functional project teams to ensure accurate data sourcing and support scalable reporting features. Lead and own data-driven projects as required.
    • Identify innovative data-driven solutions for addressing portfolio development needs.
    • Participate in new product launch teams as required.

    • Ability to communicate with colleagues in the most effective manner in written and spoken interactions; ability to flex communication style depending on the situation
  • Desirable Technical Skills:
    • A working knowledge of SQL
    • Working knowledge of advanced statistical analyses
    • Experience working with common scientific literature databases (e.g., SciFinder, Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, etc.)
    • Knowledge of the scholarly publishing landscape and peer-review process
  • Educational Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of related experience in an academic or business setting; advanced degree in Mathematics or Science are preferred

 

Position location: ACS Headquarters in Washington, DC. Consideration may be given to remote candidates as well as those who would work out of other ACS offices – such as Columbus, OH, or in Oxford, UK.
