The Communications Specialist will distribute the Communications team’s scientific content to media and will develop and improve production workflows for news content. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring media coverage of ACS and the research it publicizes and for preparing reports related to media outreach and coverage. The position reports directly to the Sr. Manager, Digital Communications & Engagement, within the Communications Division.

 

Essential Duties

  • Distributing news to media. Uploads press releases to various news distribution sites, including email services and science news services. Supports web content for Society & Media Communications as the team’s backup content management system user.
  • Project and production management. Using project management best practices and technical solutions, ensures smooth production of communications content by developing and implementing workflows that meet deadlines, reduce redundancies, and maintain high standards of quality and accuracy. Facilitates project status awareness and communication among stakeholders and recommends process improvements.
  • Monitoring media coverage. Monitors coverage of ACS in the media and provides excerpts and data to other staff for awareness, action, and promotion.
  • Evaluation and reporting. Using analytical tools and processes, shares data-driven insights and recommendations for improvement internally. Generates qualitative and quantitative reports on communications efforts on a monthly, quarterly, annual, and campaign-specific basis.

 

Job Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required. Desirable areas of study include communications, journalism, marketing, chemistry, or a related field. A chemistry background is helpful and preferred. Three to five years of professional experience in communications, public relations, the news business, or project management is required. The successful candidate will have excellent project management skills and attention to detail, be comfortable working on a team, and be able to juggle multiple tasks under deadline pressure. Knowledge of email distribution tools and basic HTML helpful. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

 

This position will be primarily based in the D.C. office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
