Education Division Overview

The mission of the ACS Education Division is to serve learners and educators by building communities and supporting innovative, relevant, and effective chemistry education and professional development. The four objectives of the ACS Education Division—programs and resources, staff engagement, communities, and operations—reflect the responsiveness of the Division in meeting the needs of the changing chemistry enterprise.
 

Position Summary

This position is responsible for writing and publishing web content, updating the AACT web site (teachchemistry.org) and developing its information architecture, usability, and content voice.  The incumbent will collaborate with WASH-IT and external vendors to update AACT’s web-based applications. The position will interface with current and potential AACT members to determine user needs, and, where appropriate, create web-based solutions to meet those needs. The position reports to the Director of Precollege Engagement. The position will also collaborate with internal units and external organizations as needed to advance ACS/PCE strategic interests and contribute to other PCE web-based initiatives as needed.

 

Work Design

Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of processes and procedures of specialized field. Works under general supervision. Uses independent judgement to formulate, interpret, policies or organizational practices to provide recommendations and solutions. Performs in-depth analyses of standard problems. Work involves writing, project coordination, research, analysis, and problem solving.

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Writes and publishes web content; updates the AACT web site via the content management system and develops its information architecture, usability, and content voice. Performs editorial tasks, including reviewing web content for accuracy, consistency, and timeliness. Works with the AACT team to publish the AACT online periodical of practice, Chemistry Solutions.
  2. Collaborates with the AACT team, WASH-IT, and external vendors to support the launch of new web-based applications to meet member needs.        
  3. Participates in efforts to maximize the impact of web content, optimizing web content based on web analytics, surveys, and user interviews.
  4. Develops, monitors, and manages the AACT social media presence.
  5. Collaborates with the ACS Sales and Marketing team to launch and develop web-based AACT membership marketing opportunities, renewal campaigns, and tracking.
  6. Collaborates with the AACT team to develop and launch web content based on the ACS Chemistry in the Community textbook.
  7. Contributes to other PCE web-based initiatives (i.e. ChemMatters, Middle School Chemistry, Inquiry in Action) as needed.

 

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

College degree with experience in writing and publishing for the web. 5+ years of related experience. Working knowledge of content management, web analytics, and photo editing. Although a technical background (programming) is not necessary, the candidate must be comfortable learning new technologies and tools. Must be team-oriented in approach to problem solving along and possess excellent written and oral communication skills. A background in chemistry, science, or science education is a plus.

Division

Position Summary

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule.. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other remote days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
