The Digital Content Writer will craft engaging scripts that communicate science to various audiences through the Headline Science YouTube series and other productions, including occasional work on the Reactions video series and the Tiny Matters podcast. Working with team members and staff across the organization, the incumbent will develop strategies for attracting and engaging followers on social media platforms. Responsibilities include researching, writing, and editing outlines, story treatments, scripts, and social media posts to ensure that they are compelling and scientifically accurate.

 

 

Essential Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Research, write and develop content for public-facing digital platforms including YouTube, social media and podcasts.
  • Translate scientific information into engaging, informative, easy-to-understand content, working closely with subject matter experts to write, rewrite and/or edit complex information while ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Revise and edit scripts under tight deadlines.
  • Understand and apply algorithm strategies used by YouTube and social media to create digital content that helps us grow our audiences.
  • Stay informed about, document and share best practices. 
  • Edit and/or improve content prepared by others by providing constructive feedback.
  • Understand, inform and adhere to brand and strategic communications guidelines to ensure messaging is consistent with organizational mission and tone of voice. 

 

 

Essential Job Requirements  

Education    

College degree in communications, journalism, video, television or a related field or equivalent work experience is required. Degree or concentration in chemistry or related scientific field is preferred. 
 

Experience    

5+ years of digital content creation and/or video production experience is required. Experience translating scientific concepts into engaging videos is strongly preferred. Previous experience with YouTube analytics is a plus.
 

Knowledge/Skills    

The successful staff member will have the ability to translate technical subjects into engaging content that is readily understandable by a variety of different audiences. An ability to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand and best address needs is required. The ability to participate in a cross-functional environment with various edit touchpoints is required.

 

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
