Division Overview 

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) publishes over 75 high-quality scholarly journals focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. It thus provides its members and the worldwide scientific community with a comprehensive collection of high-quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences.    

 

 

Department Overview

The Global Marketing Department within ACS Publications is responsible for developing marketing strategies and integrated campaign plans to engage our target audience and strengthen our relationships with them. The Department’s objectives for engaging our audience are to increase the brand equity and, ultimately, enable the revenue capture for the Division’s product lines of over 75 journals, eBooks, and a range of digital offerings. The current target audience includes researchers, authors, reviewers, editors, institutional/corporate librarians, and administrators, funders, ACS members, and the range of end-users. 

 


Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Global Marketing, the Director of Strategic Communications & Brand will bring a passion for storytelling, highly creative mindset, strong business acumen, and well-organized approach. The incumbent will lead a small team of creative and communications staff (and engage agencies as needed) to drive consistent Division-level messaging to internal and external audiences, establish and nurture relationships with key industry outlets, represent ACS Publications on industry-related communications groups, handle public relations activities (in partnership with the Society’s central communications team), support strategic internal communications, establish and roll-out social media best practices across Publications, and develop and deliver the requisite brand elements beyond just visual identity.

 

The in-office position is preferably based in Washington, D.C., with Oxford, UK as possible consideration.

 


Position Accountabilities

  1. Lead and coach high-performing team to apply communications, public relations, and creative design best practices and embrace continuous improvement approach in everything they do.
  2. Develop the team into a Center of Excellence that delivers superb services to Marketing and other stakeholders within the Division.
  3. Lead the implementation and management of the Division’s brand strategy by defining the core pillars of the brand and developing all the requisite brand elements, not just visual identity.
  4. Identify and prioritize areas of focus to support business goals and objectives through strategic communications initiatives.
  5. Activate the ACS Publications story through earned and paid media, social channels, and staff advocates.
  6. Play a key role in the development of creative assets and engaging content that increase our brand equity and/or support the integrated marketing campaigns across our product portfolio.
  7. Commission and/or leverage market and customer research to continuously identify opportunities to refine the brand and grow it equity.
  8. Engage with peers in industry-related communications groups and effectively advocate the Division’s perspective on key topics.
  9. Develop PR strategies and dynamic pitches and partner with Society’s central communications team to support the Division revenue goals
  10. Draft press releases, as necessary, to announce strategic partnerships, significant Sales successes, product launches, etc.
  11. Create and maintain visible professional presence on the Division’s central social media accounts and drive adoption of best practices.
  12. Create and deploy engaging social media marketing tactics on behalf of the Division, highlighting its programs, products, events, and other relevant engagement opportunities.

 


Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business, or related field with MBA strongly desired, along with the following qualifications:

  • 7+ years of progressive communications responsibilities in the publishing industry, preferably in scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing.
  • An entrepreneurial, energetic, and collaborative leader with highest level of personal accountability, keen attention to detail, and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Experienced with managing and developing small and growing teams. Ability to flex between the role of a player and a coach/manager.
  • Experienced with building a team of communications and brand experts into a center-of-excellence function.
  • Critical thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be capable of writing and creating content that tells a compelling story to target audiences.
  • Executive presence with an ability drive alignment across a diverse set of senior leaders and stakeholders.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to build strong relationships with cross-functional team members and influence colleagues effectively.  
  • Strategic agency management experience, with a specific emphasis on brand and PR strategy.
  • Excellent planning, implementation, and analytical skills. Able to identify long-term opportunities and trends.

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement.
