Division and Unit Overview

The Marketing, Sales and New Product Innovation Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing sales programs for the ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent to this is analyzing all results and recommending future direction for the marketing and positioning of ACS Publications’ products within the chemical/scientific community marketplace. The Marketing Department is committed to building a better online, purchasing, and reading experience, as well as improving the scholarly research and communications environment for both the customer and the end user. Key constituents include institutional librarian administrators, corporate librarians, authors, reviewers, ACS members, editors, and the range of end-users (subscribers and non-subscribers).

 

A critical function of the Marketing Department is a strategic outreach program that fosters communication and nurtures relationships with many of these key constituents. With an extensive portfolio of journals, eBooks and other digital products, the Marketing Department is tasked with developing ongoing conversations and strengthening relationships to instigate positive brand recognition and ultimately increase sales and revenue. With a truly global research community as its audience, ACS Publications has a growing need to expand its footprint and influence, both on a global and regional level.

 

Position Summary

 

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Global Conference & Events, the Events & Exhibits Manager will be responsible for the implementation of all ACS Publications Outreach Events (in-person, hybrid & virtual) including Innovation Symposia, ACS Publications Forums, Workshops, Summits, Tradeshows and Editorial event management and logistics. The incumbent will also provide guidance and oversight on the execution of the ACS Publications exhibits program and special events. The incumbent will work very closely with a cross functional team including the Marketing Events Manager, Publishers and Managing Editors, Sales Directors, and Marketing Managers.

 

The Events & Exhibits Manager will provide project and event coordination to multi-layered outreach events.  The incumbent will provide support with managing budgets and overseeing the coordination of all logistics which will require the exploration and execution of project management platforms, schedules, regular communications and reporting. The manager will be expected to work cross-functionally to manage the execution of these events with various stakeholders and create qualitative and quantitative measures to evaluate success and consequently enhance the program to better serve our global community of authors, researchers, and institutional customers/librarians. The Events & Exhibits Manager will be tasked with fostering relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, overseeing and effectively managing multiple, time sensitive priorities.

 

The incumbent will manage one direct report, the Events and Management Coordinator, who supports the coordination of the exhibits program and special events and provides administration support to the division’s Directors.

 

Normally, this role will require a significant travel, domestically and internationally—upwards of 30%.  

 

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  1. Manage conferences, meetings and events for ACS Publications to include industry tradeshows along with virtual conferences and events.
  2. Manage the event operations lifecycle and the development of event processes (vendor selection, negotiation tools, and templates) logistics and execution while overseeing event experience design to deliver compelling event experiences. Drive best practices for operations, project and budgetary management.
  3. Utilize exceptional project management skills to develop forecasts and management and track performance against events budgets, and to oversee team collaboration, ensuring the successful execution of the ACS global outreach events portfolio.
  4. Work cross-functionally with colleagues on event/conference strategy, conception, event operations, audience engagement, and execution of a growing portfolio of virtual and in-person events. Represent ACS Publications on Society-wide event initiatives and collaborate with colleagues across all areas of the organization.
  5. Manage one direct report: Events & Management Coordinator. 

 
 
Required edcuation and experience:
 
Undergraduate degree in Business, Marketing or related field; CMP a plus. Minimum of 5 years of related experience in, event management, project management and/or communications. Position requires good organization and communication skills. Must demonstrate proven strategic and operational expertise in events and marketing. Position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. International experience is a plus. Must demonstrate strong organizational management skills with an exceptional ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. Must show proven success in event planning and analysis skills in sales, marketing and business strategy. Experience in technical publications and/or online services preferred. Must possess strong management and leadership skills. Position requires familiarity and experience with the Microsoft Office suite, event management software (CVENT), Virtual even platforms (i.e. On24 and Zoom), CRM software, and project management platforms (i.e. Asana or Basecamp).
