Information Technology Overview

 

The Washington Information Technology department at the American Chemical Society seeks to provide high-quality technical guidance and support for all systems needs both for the Society members and for our internal customers.  We provide desktop systems support, development and management of new systems implementation and management of a wide-area networking infrastructure that serves our customers.  Through these means, we aim to provide excellent access to Society information to further the goals of the Society.

 

Position Summary

 

As a member of the Enterprise Systems Team, the incumbent in this position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing ACS Washington’s storage and backup environments and data centers. The incumbent reports to the Manager, Storage, and Data Centers and is tasked with supporting data backup environments, Avamar, Data Domain, Cyber recover, Cyber Sense, Storage Area Network (SAN – PowerMax/VMax), Network Attached Storage (NAS - ENas, PowerStore, and unity), and data center inventory software. This is an Entry Professional position in which customer service and network-computing skills are well developed.

 

Work Design

 

Works under the managerial direction on goals and objectives that significantly impact the organization. Assure that day-to-day data backup, recovery, storage, and data center operations are reliable and efficient. Provide excellent customer support. Work with operating principals to guide actions. 

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  • Perform daily backup and data restoration activities.
  • Provide daily backup status reports to customers.
  • Perform quarterly data verification and recovery tests.
  • Provide first-level technical support for all data backup and recovery systems.
  • Work with the larger team to troubleshoot connectivity and compute issues as it relates to data recovery systems.
  • Work with teams to maintain and upgrade backup systems.
  • Maintain Data Center Inventory Systems.
  • Provide data center support including but not limited to rack, stack, and cabling of all devices in the data centers.
  • Willingness to gain knowledge of ACS storage environments including Dell/EMC Data Domain, Avamar, Unity, PowerStore, PowerMax, ENas, reporting tools, and inventory applications.
  • Gain knowledge of network components and design related to data recovery systems.
  • Work tasks will be required outside of core working hours. Minimum travel will be required.

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

 

College degree or equivalent experience.  Minimum 3 years of experience with 1 year of hands-on data recovery, network, and computing experience. Experience with Linux, Windows, and VMWare is required. Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot system problems is required. Communication skills to interact with team members, customers and management is required. Solid understanding of storage protocols including Fibre Channel, Fibre Channel over Ethernet, NFS, and CIFS.

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
