Division and Unit Overview

The Marketing, Sales and New Product Innovation Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing sales programs for the ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent to this is analyzing all results and recommending future direction for the marketing and positioning of ACS Publications’ products within the chemical/scientific community marketplace. The Marketing Department is committed to building a better online, purchasing, and reading experience, as well as improving the scholarly research and communications environment for both the customer and the end user. Key constituents include institutional librarian administrators, corporate librarians, authors, reviewers, ACS members, editors, and the range of end-users (subscribers and non-subscribers).

A critical function of the Marketing Department is a strategic outreach program that fosters communication and nurtures relationships with many of these key constituents. With an extensive portfolio of journals, eBooks and other digital products, the Marketing Department is tasked with developing ongoing conversations and strengthening relationships to instigate positive brand recognition and ultimately increase sales and revenue. With a truly global research community as its audience, ACS Publications has a growing need to expand its footprint and influence, both on a global and regional level.

 

Position Summary

Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Assistant Director, Global Conferences & Events, the Manager, Global Outreach Events is responsible for managing the ACS Publications’ outreach engagement strategy, structure and corresponding content features, with a particular focus on the ACS Publications Innovation Symposia, ACS Publications Forums and other outreach events. They are responsible for leading the analysis and strategy development of such programs to support overall business objectives. The incumbent will explore, conceptualize and gain buy-in for new initiatives in the academic, corporate and government space. To support such outreach events, the Manager, Global Outreach Events will be responsible for the development and execution of integrated marketing plans to effectively promote these (virtual, hybrid and in-person) events, as well as the analysis of their effectiveness. They are tasked with fostering relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, overseeing and effectively managing multiple, time sensitive priorities. Working with a variety of stakeholders, the incumbent will analyze the market and a range of important data points, to set the outreach events calendar in such a way that achieves the program’s key objectives. The Manager, Global Outreach Events will work in close collaboration with the Manager, Global Conferences & Event to ensure these various programs are executed effectively.

In addition, the Manager, Global Outreach Events will have three direct reports, the Associate Outreach Marketing Manager, Virtual Events Specialist and Marketing Events Manager, Asia.

The role will require travel, domestically and internationally—upwards of 25%.

 

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Work with the Assistant Director, Global Outreach Events, to set the strategic direction, goals and overall program management, promotion and execution for all ACS Publications outreach event efforts – symposia, forums, summits, workshops, etc.
    • Oversee the implementation of event goals and objectives, communication plans and content creation; lead core project team meetings for outreach events. 
    • Create and work cross functionality both internally and externally to determine & prioritize the global events calendar for all ACS Publications Outreach Events. 
    • Explore, recommend and oversee the development of new programs and events.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with editorial contacts and various professionals who serve as speakers and panelists at the various events.
  2. Establish and lead the overall direction of outreach events (virtual, hybrid and in-person) marketing and audience development ensuring attendance goals for events are met and conduct post-event analysis to assess opportunities for growth and improvement. 
    • Develop and execute integrated marketing campaigns to drive attendance and identify opportunities to nurture and engage with our authors, editors, reviewers, customers and librarians post event. 
    • Provide strategic guidance and oversight of the development of content for the outreach events program and educational materials to promote ACS Publications’ brand where applicable.
    • Collaborate with Outreach Communications and Social Media counterparts to launch PR initiatives to support the ACS Publications’ outreach event strategy across all areas of media including press outlets, blogs and listservs. 
  3. Represent ACS Publications on Society-wide event initiatives and collaborates with colleagues across all areas of the organization.
  4. Manage the Associate Outreach Marketing Manager, Virtual Events Specialist and Marketing Events Manager, Asia.

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

Undergraduate degree in Marketing or related field; 10+ years of related experience in marketing program administration, event management and/or communications. Solid understanding of communicating to a global audience. Position requires good organization and communication skills. Experience in technical publications and/or online services preferred. Must demonstrate skills in professional writing and strategic thinking. Must demonstrate a quantifiable history of demand generation campaign development, execution and pipeline contribution, as well as strong organizational management skills, exceptional ability to prioritize, and manage time effectively. Must possess strong management and leadership skills. Position requires familiarity and experience with the Microsoft Office suite, Eloqua (or similar), On24 (or similar), CRM software, project management platforms and key social media platforms.
