The American Chemical Society is looking to fill the position of Manager, Society & Media Relations.  The incumbent oversees the production and distribution of ACS content and the pitching of news to journalists worldwide. Specific duties include working with units across the organization to develop press releases and other communications products, ensuring the high quality of those materials, managing the ACS Experts program to respond to inquiries from reporters, overseeing the National Historic Chemical Landmarks program, and supervising the proper use of ACS branding.

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  • Oversees the day-to-day editorial operations; approves content and graphic material (i.e. print, web, mobile, social media, etc.) to ensure consistency and meets publication requirements.
  • Manage the Society & Media Relations unit and provide effective oversight of projects to support the ACS communications strategy.
  • Manage the ACS Experts program to connect journalists to reliable sources of information about the chemistry enterprise.
  • Oversee the pitching of news stories to journalists at news outlets across the world with a strong focus on science-based releases. Develop and maintain relationships with journalists.
  • Hire, train, manage and mentor staff to support the strategic goals of the Communications Division and ACS.
  • Oversee the ACS branding program, which supports proper use of ACS branding.

 

Position Requirements

 

At least 10 years of related experience and some prior experience in management and science communication are required.  Experience writing science-based stories and working in journalism or with journalists is required. Additional experience with social media and basic graphics are preferred. Must have a demonstrated proficiency at taking complex scientific concepts and translating them for non-technical audiences. Must have a proven ability to effectively bring complex projects to completion with minimum oversight. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
