Position Summary

ACS Publications, by virtue of its products and wide-ranging peer review, touches hundreds of thousands of active researchers. Our focus has been on their research outputs, not the skills and techniques required for researchers to excel professionally. The Division’s primary products and revenue center have traditionally been peer-reviewed journals that are widely disseminated through online subscriptions, receiving the most downloads and citations in chemistry. ACS Publications has a significant footprint in the global academy: 3,500 institutions from high schools to teaching hospitals subscribe and use our content services or seek to enhance their professional standing though our publications and events. To further enhance the impact of the Division, the New Product Innovation team is tasked with developing and launching new products, services, tools, or solutions consistent with the Societal mission to provide indispensable information.

The goal of the Technology Manager is to effectively manage both internal and external technical teams in the development of new research data products that serve the chemistry community. In support of near and long-term business and technology objectives, the Technology Manager will manage FTE and contractor resources (Project Manager(s), Business Analyst(s), Developers, Designers) as well as third party vendors, and will be working on various projects to design, develop, and maintain a target-state architecture framework and research data products.

 

This position requires a strong and innovative technical background which includes a working knowledge of Scrum/Agile methodologies/lifecycles, general IT Architecture principles, product development, and strategic roadmap development. This role also requires experience in personnel management, knowledge of administration best practices, and proficiency reporting to leadership. This role will collaborate with colleagues from across IT, others in the Innovation team, and the Division’s Sales and Marketing teams. If required, the Technology Manager will also manage ‘in production’ technology products and platforms including managing day to day operations, disaster recovery planning and management, release management, etc. This position reports to the Director, New Product Innovation.

 

 

Position Accountabilities

  • Direct and oversee technical project implementations, tracking success and key performance indicators, and providing periodic assessments and reports to NPI Leadership. 
  • Develop and maintain roll-up schedules based on the research data product delivery dates and technology scope.   
  • Ensure that the design and development of the technical architecture framework and NPI product suite leverages the latest web technologies and software design best practices.
  • Ensure that implemented solutions align with business and technical vision.
  • Engage and collaborate with internal SMEs to understand business opportunities as well as external customers to understand needs and pain points.
  • Working with key Stakeholders, Solution Architect, Project Manager(s) to develop phased roadmaps that frontload business value and deliver critical capabilities with quality.
  • Ensure that architectural vision is clearly and continually communicated to business leadership and delivery teams.
  • Understand and foster collaboration across multiple internal and external teams and cultures.
  • Follow vendor management best practices.
  • Provide customer service to end-users.
  • Develop disaster recovery plans for all critical NPI systems (as appropriate).
  • Responsible for technology budgets, status reporting, etc.
  • Ensure research data Confluence site and related documentation are kept up to date.
  • Manage and develop a team of staff and contractors.

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

  • BA/BS required, MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
  • 10+ years’ experience managing both internal and outsourced technical teams.
  • Extensive experience working on large, innovative, transformational projects and a proven ability to bring technical teams together around a shared architectural vision.
  • Experience shipping/delivering new products to external customers.
  • Understanding of emerging and/or open sources technologies.
  • Solid experience with software development lifecycles as well as scrum/agile development methodologies.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and an ability to document and communicate in both business and technical terms.
  • Collaborative working style, effective at working with cross-functional teams to produce high quality products.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely.
