The American Chemical Society (ACS) is seeking an Senior Technology Operations Manager to support our efforts to build and preserve our collection of premier scientific journals and related products for the academic, corporate, and government research communities. This position will be a Technology Operations Manager within the ACS Publications IT Team with a range of technical and leadership skills.  The candidate should be proficient with IT service management, technology operations, and multiple technology platforms and environments.  The candidate should have experience with and be capable of technical project team leadership, process design, and hands-on operational support.  This role will provide support and development for multiple technology and business units around the world.



The key outcomes of this position are the department’s ability to achieve the following:
1.    Improved coverage of mission-critical systems supporting Global Production & Operations (GPO), Sales Operations, and Publications Finance units as primary internal clients.
2.    Improved responsiveness to time-sensitive production problems.
3.    Established technology service management processes including defined service level objects and agreements. 
4.    Increased depth to support our growing technology stack for revenue-driving initiatives (Supplementary Cover Monetization, ACS Direct Correct, Read and Publish agreements, and GPO Off-Shore Vendor Management).
5.    Proactive identification of server, system, and application issues (rather than reacting to problems identified by staff).
6.    More efficient identification of production/system/server problems and improved ability to allocate resources to address and resolve root causes for long-term benefits as opposed to "band-aid" cures).


Primary responsibilities of the Technology Operations Manager are as follows:
1.    Leads, consults, and manages the transition of enterprise applications to production (ie., Operations and Support). 
2.    Consults in the development of standards, policies and methodologies within the Wash-IT organization.
3.    Serves as primary liaison with other technology operations teams including technical infrastructure, information security, and enterprise service desk.
4.    Develops and delivers on-going operational metrics, system/application KPIs, service level objectives, and service level agreements.
5.    Manage client expectations through effective communications that include skilled listening to understand their challenges, and articulate sharing of IT-related opportunities and challenges that both educate and inform
6.    Provides business systems analysis and requirements definition for complex Information Technology projects.
7.    Develops effective business and technical designs for applications meeting business unit requirements.
8.    Defines, establishes, and manages IT service management processes using industry standard methodologies.
9.    Stays abreast of industry developments and communicates opportunities and threats to management.
10.    Mentors and provides career development for junior staff.



Required Skills:   

1.    College degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred.
2.    Expertise in developing and supporting global systems and applications in multiple time zones.
3.    Competency in business analysis and requirements definition. 
4.    Experience with DevOps industry best practices and processes preferred.  
5.    Atlassian code management tools (Bamboo, Maven, Eclipse) and application development experience preferred.
6.    Experience with implementing and supporting batch-process scheduling tools such as Control-M preferred.
7.    Effective communications skills for interacting with internal clients and users.
8.    Leadership ability and a willingness to take ownership of projects and tasks.



Required Experience:   

1.    10 years total including 3 years of experience as a technology support team lead or manager.
2.    Experience with implementing Service Management tools and procedures.
3.    Experience in managing staff and contractors. 
4.    Experience in publishing preferred but not required.


This position is based in the Columbus, Ohio office of ACS. 

ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
