The Global Marketing Department within the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) is responsible for developing marketing strategies, implementing outreach initiatives, delivering award-winning creative and executing superior events to engage its global audience, all within an advanced technical and data-driven environment. Position Summary

 

Reporting to the Director, Global Conferences & Events, the Manager, Exhibits & Events is responsible for directing and implementing all logistics for ACS Publications Outreach Events (in-person, hybrid and virtual), including Innovation Symposia, ACS Publications Forums, Workshops, Summits, Tradeshows, and special editorial events. The incumbent oversees the formulation and execution of the Publications Division’s conference and exhibit calendar, ensuring a consistent presence and providing guidance on key tradeshow deliverables. The incumbent works very closely with a cross-functional team, including the Manager, Global Outreach & Marketing Events and the entire Outreach Events team, as well as marketing professionals, publishers, managing editors and sales directors.  

 

The Manager, Exhibits & Events, serves as a project manager for a multi-layered outreach events program.  The incumbent contributes to budget management and oversees the coordination of all logistics, requiring the exploration and execution of project management platforms, schedules, regular communications, and reporting. In this cross functional role, the Manager, Exhibits & Events is expected to determine qualitative and quantitative measures to evaluate success, thereby enhancing the program to better serve our global community of authors, researchers, and institutional customers/librarians. To be successful in this role, the Manager, Events & Exhibits must foster relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, overseeing and effectively managing multiple, time-sensitive priorities.

 

The incumbent will manage one direct report, the Events and Management Coordinator, who supports the coordination of the exhibits and events program and provides administrative support to the Division’s Marketing Directors.

 

Normally, this role will require travel, domestically and internationally, upwards of 20%.  

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  1. Manage the event operations lifecycle and the development of event processes (vendor selection, negotiation tools, and templates), logistics, and execution while overseeing event design to deliver compelling event experiences. Drive best practices for operations, project, and budgetary management.
  2. Manage conferences, meetings, and events for ACS Publications to include industry tradeshows, along with conferences and events.
  3. Apply exceptional project management skills to develop forecasts and management, track performance against events budgets, and oversee team collaboration, ensuring the successful execution of the ACS global outreach events portfolio.
  4. Collaborate and work cross-functionally with colleagues on event/conference strategy, conception, event operations, audience engagement, and execution of a growing portfolio of virtual and in-person events.
  5. Represent ACS Publications on Society-wide event initiatives and collaborate with colleagues across all areas of the organization.
  6. Manage one direct report: Events & Management Coordinator.

 

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

 

Undergraduate degree in Business, Marketing, or related field; CMP preferred. 8+ years of related experience in event management, project management, and/or communications. Position requires great organization and communication skills. Must demonstrate proven strategic and operational expertise in events and marketing. Position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. International experience is a plus. Must demonstrate strong organizational management skills with an exceptional ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. Must show proven success in event planning and analysis skills in sales, marketing, and business strategy. Experience in technical publications and/or online services preferred. Must possess strong management and leadership skills. Position requires familiarity and experience with the Microsoft Office suite, event management software (CVENT), Virtual even platforms (i.e., On24 and Zoom), CRM software, and project management platforms (i.e., Basecamp).

 

 

 

 

 

 

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
