Position Summary

ACS Publications, by virtue of its products and wide-ranging peer review, touches hundreds of thousands of active researchers. Our focus has been on their research outputs, not the skills and techniques required for researchers to excel professionally. The Division’s primary products and revenue center have traditionally been peer-reviewed journals that are widely disseminated through online subscriptions, receiving the most downloads and citations in chemistry. ACS Publications has a significant footprint in the global academy: 3,500 institutions from high schools to teaching hospitals subscribe and use our content services or seek to enhance their professional standing though our publications and events. To further enhance the impact of the Division, the New Product Innovation team is tasked with developing and launching new products, services, tools, or solutions consistent with the Societal mission to provide indispensable information.


The newly-created managing editor position is designed to oversee the day-to-day development and delivery of editorial content for new products and services within the ACS eBook and eReference program. As managing editor, you will collaborate with authors, editors, reviewers, and staff, as well as supervise in-house and contract editors, illustrators, animators, and administrative staff.  Our ideal candidate will have experience as a customer-focused managing editor for long-form, rich, web-based content made up of a variety of media – text, video, animations, and illustrations.  While any sort of exposure to science is not a requirement, an interest in science is a must. You will report to the Publisher of this group.


Position Accountabilities

  • Maintain high-level contact with authors throughout the content creation phase, providing information to ensure they reach their target readership, take advantage of web-based content features, and understand the editorial workflow;
  • Build and nurture a team of in-house and contract manuscript editors, animators, and illustrators to help authors develop and finalize their content for production;
  • Create and manage editorial content creation schedules for 75-100 works; inform stakeholders of any variance;
  • Resolve issues as they arise and notify product owners when necessary;
  • Collaborate with product owners to ensure works are market-based, high-quality publications;
  • Manage costs against pre-agreed budgets;
  • Post-publication, analyze performance metrics across properties to quantify results;
  • Implement best practices, workflows, tools, and templates to maximize the efficiency and quality of the publishing process.


 Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years experience as a managing editor or project manager for digital publications.
  • Demonstrated experience with planning and coordinating people, content, and editorial processes in deadline-oriented environments
  • Curious and able to engage with academic STEM authors
  • Strong author and customer-focused approach to decision-making and problem-solving


Position is ideally based in our Washington, DC headquarters.
