Unit Overview
Background: The Office of Sustainable Development advances sustainability-related initiatives 
at the American Chemical Society (ACS). The Office oversees the execution of the ACS 
Campaign for a Sustainable Future. The initiatives of the latter include convening the community 
around sustainability topics, setting up a grant program, creating an online sustainability portal, 
and educational outreach. Under the Office of Sustainability is the ACS Green Chemistry 
Institute® (GCI) whose mission is to catalyze and enable the implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering throughout the global chemistry enterprise and the ACS. The Institute focuses its efforts in four key areas: advancing science and research, integrating green chemistry into higher education, catalyzing industrial implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering, and supporting environmental justice initiatives. In addition, the Office supports ACS advocacy efforts for implementation of green chemistry throughout the chemistry enterprise. Some of the key initiatives of the GCI include an annual conference, summer school, student awards, educational resource development, industry roundtables, and communications. Both the GCI and the Office of Sustainability are part of the ACS’s Division of Scientific Advancement.

 

 

 

Position Summary
The position reports to the Director of Sustainable Development. The Portfolio Manager is responsible for implementing a broad dissemination and communication strategy for the Green Chemistry Institute and Office of Sustainability, which is central to its mission. The incumbent will support the programs through meaningful and solutions-oriented interactions with internal and external stakeholders aimed at:
(i) Leading the overall marketing and communication strategy for the Institute and the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future, including coordination of marketing for annual GC&E conference, annual UN Sustainable Development Goal Summit, and messaging.
(ii) Working with vendors and team to develop media content that highlights the contributions of the GCI and of the green chemistry and engineering research community to sustainable development.
(iii) Acquisition of sponsors and exhibitors for conferences, and coordination with Office of Development to process contracts, track and report.
(iv) Managing the communication channels of the GCI and Office of Sustainability, including newsletters, websites, webinars, social medial as well as contact with media partners 
and press.
(v) Providing IT and strategic communication support to ACS Campaign for Sustainable Future Sustainability Platform.
(vi) Providing communication, IT and marketing support to the GCI Roundtables, including the development of web-based tools, websites and printed materials.
(vii) Providing communication, IT and marketing support for the GCI-led awards programs, including the Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, student awards, and GCI summer school program.
(viii) Managing contractors who support communication and IT programs.
In addition to the project management aspects of the role, additional key features include: the ability to move quickly and thoughtfully, effectively interact with multiple people at all levels across the Society, be highly responsive to queries and requests, calmly navigate ambiguity, and develop and maintain trust of sensitive information and of people across the Society. The role includes collaboration with team members to determine and prioritize programs, initiatives, and events. 

 


Position Accountabilities
The candidate would be joining a mission-driven team within a large organization. A self-starter possessing the ability to quickly absorb information and drive assignments to completion with limited oversight is required. Excellent organizational ability, combined with flexibility and adaptability in working with multiple, diverse companies and in handling rapidly changing priorities is essential. Experience working in and with teams to accomplish the short- and long term mission of the Division and the ACS is essential. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are required as well as a technology-savvy approach.

 

Software Details: Required proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Willingness to learn new software platforms utilized by both internal and external stakeholders. Familiarity with SAP or other business/financial management software is desirable.

Position Summary

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
