Position Summary

ACS Publications, by virtue of its products and wide-ranging peer review, touches hundreds of thousands of active researchers. Our focus has been on their research outputs, not the skills and techniques required for researchers to excel professionally. The Division’s primary products and revenue center have traditionally been peer-reviewed journals that are widely disseminated through online subscriptions, receiving the most downloads and citations in chemistry. ACS Publications has a significant footprint in the global academy: 3,500 institutions from high schools to teaching hospitals subscribe and use our content services or seek to enhance their professional standing though our publications and events. To further enhance the impact of the Division, the New Product Innovation team is tasked with developing and launching new products, services, tools, or solutions consistent with the Societal mission to provide indispensable information.

The goal of the Product Manager, New Initiatives is to lead the development lifecycle for nascent products within the innovation team and plan out related spinoff products that leverage connected data or technology. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day product management of 1-3 new products including defining the feature and functionality roadmap, liaising with vendors and IT, customer onboarding and support, monthly reporting, and working alongside Sales and Marketing on customer collateral. As a start-up initiative within a traditional organization, the incumbent should be comfortable solving a wide range of dynamic issues. The Product Manager, New Initiatives will work closely with external vendors, colleagues across IT and Membership, others in the Innovation team, and the Division’s Sales and Marketing teams. This position reports to the Portfolio Manager, Data Products.

 

Position Accountabilities

  • Lead the vision, strategy, and feature development for 1-3 new products across various platforms, including defining success metrics and managing the product lifecycle.
  • Work with the Technical Product & Platform Manager, vendors, and IT to define requirements for features, functionality, and enhancements.
  • Define product timelines, milestones, and success metrics for each product line.
  • Provide onboarding and technical support to customers, including consulting on best practices.
  • Maintain awareness of customer and end-user needs through regular surveys and market research.
  • Participate in launch activities including go-to-market plans, training, and communication. Participate in the development of marketing and sales collateral and tools.
  • Understand the competitive landscape and evaluate market trends to better inform product roadmap.

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

  • BA/BS required, MS preferred, PhD or equivalent experience in business, product development, computer science, information science, or a scientific field a plus.
  • 10+ years of demonstrated experience managing products and external vendors. Experience in product development from concept to execution a plus.
  • Experience with product management platforms such as Aha!, Rally, Asana, Gainsight, etc.
  • Experience with innovation management platforms such as Ideascale, Brightidea, ServiceNow, etc.
  • Familiarity with open access, publishing, and virtual meetings desired.
  • Accustomed to working with startup products.
  • Adept at dealing with ambiguity and a frequently changing work environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple products and tasks while meeting stated deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading through influence.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Effective problem solver and multitasker with strong analytical skills.
