Education Division Overview

Position Summary

The program manager is responsible for developing, coordinating, and supporting operations associated with the publication of ACS resources aimed at undergraduate and graduate students. This includes managing the authoring and production of the Chemistry in Context textbook as well as contributing to the editorial and production processes for the online publications inChemistry and the Graduate & Postdoctoral Chemist. The work involves problem solving, analyzing user data, project management, and thinking conceptually and creatively.


Position Accountabilities

  1. Manages work and collaborations with publishers, author teams, and advisory boards for the Chemistry in Context textbook project. Reviews content in the textbook, coordinates author writing retreats, and organizes professional development opportunities for instructors who use the textbook.

  2. Contributes to the editorial, production, and promotional processes for inChemistry and the Graduate & Postdoctoral Chemist online publications. This includes assisting with identification of and communication with authors, contributing story ideas, writing story summaries and headlines, fact checking, researching information and gathering data about a topic, and developing marketing strategies.

  3. Partners with internal groups (such as other groups within Education, Marketing, Membership, Communications) to enhance the visibility of and engagement with Chemistry in Context, inChemistry, and Graduate & Postdoctoral Chemist. The goal is to maximize reach by partnering with internal ACS entities who collaborate with  other professional societies, faculty, students, and the general public.

  4. Coordinates and manages the web presence for Chemistry in Context and assists with proofreading and performing quality checks of story components and layouts.

  5. Completes and assists with special projects as assigned.


Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related discipline required. 7+ years of related experience, including experience in science writing, publishing, project management, and chemistry education is highly preferred. Outstanding interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills (written, presentation, influencing); ability to manage multiple projects; willingness to travel; desire to work closely with and motivate others; flexibility to adapt to a complex and changing work environment; organizational and analytical skills; and attention to detail are highly desirable.




Position Summary

This position will be based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
