Division and Unit Overview

The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® is to catalyze and enable the implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering principles into all aspects of the global chemical enterprise and throughout the Society. It does this through activities such as its signature Industrial Roundtables that engage global corporations to integrate green chemistry and engineering into their industries, its annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference that draws diverse practitioners from around the world, and its educational initiatives that provide trusted resources, training and development opportunities to educators and students, among other initiatives. The aim is to empower practitioners to reimagine chemistry and engineering for a sustainable future. The Institute is part of the American Chemical Society’s Scientific Advancement Division.

Position Summary

This position reports to the Director of Sustainable Development. The Manager is responsible for implementing and sustaining green and sustainable chemistry initiatives and programs in all three areas of the Institute’s work (education, industry, and science). Solutions may include collaborations with other ACS Divisions including, ACS Publications, Chemical Abstracts Services, Membership, Education, among others. The manager may also be tasked with special projects and overseeing development of external funding for routine operations and special projects. This requires a working knowledge and/or direct experience with green chemistry/sustainability issues.

Education/Experience/Technical Skills

Years of Experience: 7+ years or equivalent experience Level of Education:

College degree or equivalent experience in science or engineering; MS/MA in science or engineering with relevant experience acceptable; Ph.D. in chemistry with background in green and sustainable chemistry preferred.

Position Responsibilities

  • Supports and advises the ACS GCI strategy in selected areas of effort.
  • Serves as the primary ACS GCI coordinator for educational projects and programs

          o Educational resource development project

             o Oversees the creation of new resources for general and organic chemistry courses         

             o Oversees the evaluation and implementation of these resources

          o ACS Student chapter resource development (undergraduate level)

          o Collaborates across ACS staff functions to integrate green and sustainable chemistry into    

             educational efforts and stakeholder engagements

  • Administers judging and supports all ACS GCI student awards (Ciba, Breen, Hancock, Chang, McClelland) as well as the green chemistry award for ACS undergraduate student chapters
  • May represent ACS GCI interests with internal and external stakeholders as required for new programs, special projects and other initiatives, including as liaison on a joint initiative with outside partners to provide resources and collaborative opportunities to educators.
  • Serves as a resource to the green and sustainable chemistry stakeholder community for select projects as requested.
  • Identify focused action for lasting impact related to priority areas as part of the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future

Work Design: The candidate would be joining a small, mission-driven team within a large organization. A self-starter with the ability to quickly absorb information and collaboratively drive each project to the next step is required. Excellent organizational ability combined with flexibility and adaptability in handling rapidly changing priorities is essential. Experience working in and with teams to accomplish the short- and long-term mission of the Institute and the ACS is essential. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are required as well as a technology-savvy approach. Required proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Willingness to learn new software platforms utilized by both internal and external stakeholders.

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
