Division and Unit Overview

The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® is to catalyze and enable the implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering principles into all aspects of the global chemical enterprise and throughout the Society. It does this through activities such as its signature Industrial Roundtables that engage global corporations to integrate green chemistry and engineering into their industries, its annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference that draws diverse practitioners from around the world, and its educational initiatives that provide trusted resources, training and development opportunities to educators and students, among other initiatives. The aim is to empower practitioners to reimagine chemistry and engineering for a sustainable future. The Institute is part of the American Chemical Society’s Scientific Advancement Division.


Position Summary

The position reports to the Director of Sustainable Development. The Manager is responsible for implementing and sustaining green and sustainable chemistry initiatives and programs in all three areas of the Institute’s work (education, industry, and science). The Program Manager will support the ACS GCI programs through meaningful and solutions-oriented interactions with internal and external stakeholders. Solutions may include collaborations with other ACS Divisions including, ACS Publications, Chemical Abstracts Services, Membership, Education, among others. Program support focuses on the meetings relevant to the Green Chemistry Institute such as Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, ACS national meetings and roundtables.


Education/Experience/Technical Skills

Years of Experience: 7+ years or equivalent experience

Level of Education: College degree or equivalent experience in science or engineering; MS/MA in science or engineering preferred. Meeting planning experience preferred.


Position Responsibilities

Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference Serves as the primary ACS GCI coordinator for the annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. Coordinates work with:

  o Program Chairs and Advisory Committee to develop the technical program

  o Session organizers to finalize sessions.


Position Summary

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. (or applicable) office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
