The Division of Membership is responsible for recruiting, retaining, engaging, recognizing and servicing members around the world. With over 151,000 members worldwide, providing an integrated suite of experiences and support that meet current and potential member needs is vital to the Society’s mission and future.

 

Within the Membership Division, the Office of Component Support provides opportunities, resources, training, and networks to empower volunteer leaders to serve diverse member communities including, ACS Local Sections, Technical Divisions, International Chemical Sciences Chapters.  These communities enrich the ACS member experience for our members in their local, regional, and global communities. 

 

Position Summary

 

Over the last several years, ACS has seen significant growth in the International Chemical Sciences Chapter (ICSC) program and international membership, in general.  As this membership segment continues to grow, it’s critical that ACS provide support and direction to the leadership of these groups.  

 

This position oversees and administers the ACS International Chemical Science Chapter (ICSC) Program and leads the development of new programs, products and services to support the leadership of ICSCs and enhance programs for members residing in international communities. This position provides leadership and direction to volunteer leaders and supports their administrative and programming needs.  This position works with other staff in Membership, and throughout the Society, to develop and enhance programming and expand opportunities to engage our international members and incorporate them within the broader ACS community.

 

Work design: Works with team, independently, and under general direction from manager. Identifies and recommends solutions to a variety of routine and non-routine problems. Creative, strategic, collaborative, flexible, adaptable, and political approaches are essential in this position. Program administration will accompany the creative and strategic responsibilities. 

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  1. Manage the ACS International Science Chapter Program, including administration of the ICSC charters, annual reporting; chapter communications and serving as the primary contact for ICSC volunteer leadership. 
  2. Serve as team lead for the development, planning, and execution of a regionally based/delivered (e.g., Asia, Middle East, Americas) Leadership Summit program (in-person and virtual) for ICSC and International Student Chapters.
  3. Serve as relationship manager working with internal and external partners to increase awareness and advocacy for ICSCs, and explore opportunities to engage ICSCs with other ACS communities including Local Sections, Technical Divisions and Student Chapters.  
  4. Support the International Activities Committee by partnering with the working groups as required to ensure efficient and effective committee meetings, including agenda development, materials creation and dissemination, training, action item follow up and ongoing communications. 
  5. Serve as a contributor to cross functional teams to develop, plan and coordinate Society wide global initiative and activities.
  6. Some domestic and international travel may be required (Approx. 10% time).
  7. Other duties as assigned.
     

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge 

College degree or equivalent experience; may have an advanced degree or equivalent experience 5+ years of related experience. Knowledge or experience with non-profit organizations and international affairs programs experience.  Demonstrated events planning, communications and marketing experience preferred. Experience in collaborating with internal and external groups. Outstanding interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills are essential. Strong communications skills: written, verbal, and presentation. Familiarity with member communities programming and experience working in a not-for-profit environment and with volunteers is preferable. Cultural/global awareness and experience is highly desirable Foreign language skills preferred.
