Division and Unit Overview
The American Chemical Society’s Membership Division is responsible for recruiting, retaining and recognizing members. A critical component of the Division is the Membership Operations department, which is a strong contributor in developing and delivering the programs, products, and services that create value for ACS’s Membership of over 151,000 worldwide. Similarly, the division leads an ACS-wide effort to ensure that the benefits of Society membership are recognized as an essential element of success and value for future generations of chemists worldwide.

 

Position Summary
Reporting to the Asst. Director of Membership Strategy & Operations, the Membership Project Specialist will contribute to the success of the entire organization and fulfilling strategic priorities by supporting special projects that strengthen the ACS Membership value proposition and member engagement. The specialist will work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to offer project management support for new
member benefit pilots and initiatives, the engagement of members at ACS meetings and events, governance and committee support and other special projects as required. 

Responsibilities to include, but are not limited to: benefit pilot project management support, membership project tracking, scheduling and reporting, governance communications and meeting coordination, member service and research support and other special project needs which may arise. The incumbent will be a part of the team that focuses on the acquisition, engagement, and retention of all ACS Members.

 

Work Design
Works with team, independently, and under general direction from manager. Identifies and recommends solutions to a variety of routine and non-routine problems and project inefficiencies. Creative, collaborative, flexible, adaptable, and proactive approaches are essential in this position. Project administration will accompany the creative and more tactical responsibilities. 

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Support Asst. Director and other Membership team leads in achieving department goals and executing on high priority ACS special projects as designated.
  2. Work collaboratively, in partnership with External Partnerships Manager, Society Business Solutions team and other key stakeholders to help develop project DocuSign Envelope roadmaps, timelines and processes for new benefit launches ensuring goals and timelines are met. 
  3. Support pilot initiatives by serving as member benefit administrator as needed.
  4. Provide tracking, reporting and member service support for benefit pilots and other special projects as assigned.
  5. Support Value Creation team with external partner communications, contracts with vendors, benefit transitional planning and other duties as needed.
  6. Regularly provide input and seek to improve operational efficiency, standardization of processes and reduction of time to launch for new benefits and other special projects.
  7. Assist with the coordination of on-site Membership engagement opportunities at ACS Meetings (i.e. Member Lounge, ACS Membership Booth, etc).
  8. Support ACS Membership Committee volunteers and staff on projects of interest, competitive assessments, communications and hybrid meeting coordination as needed.
  9. Occasional travel required (approximately 2 to 3 trips per year)
  10. Other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three (3) years of project management experience within a professional environment, preferably in a membership association setting. PMP a plus.
  • Experience with netFORUM or Member Management Systems a plus.
  • Technologically proficient with a solid understanding of and ability to use appropriate software products in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with project management tools (i.e. Confluence) and advanced capabilities in Excel are preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication (verbal and written).
  • Time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work within a team environment, and attention to detail required.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task to meet multiple deadlines. 

 

 

This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
