Division and Unit Overview 

The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific membership association and one of the top scientific publishers in the world.  Washington IT is responsible for providing technical support for services to member programs and for the publication of over 70 scientific journals, a weekly newsmagazine, and an extensive IT network of over 200 editorial offices, and for a rich Web Presence.  

 

The Editorial and Delivery Systems Group of Washington IT Software Engineering is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of applications that assist the core business of the Publications Division.

 

Position Summary

The incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for managing development and support of mission critical applications, with a focus on data analytics and data warehouse systems that support the Publications Division. The incumbent is expected to be a true partner to Pubs business owners and the technology adviser. This position requires strong technical experience in software development, especially in data warehouse design and implementation. He or she is responsible to establish and maintain industry best practices in support of large and complex IT systems. The incumbent works with internal IT and business customers on an ongoing basis to carry out strategic planning, build product roadmaps, identify operational needs, define Service Level Agreements, coordinate software upgrades, communicate planned system maintenance events and their impact, and define and maintain escalation paths for operational issues. The incumbent works with project teams to smoothly transition from development to operation. This position will lead the operations team to maintain high performance and high availability of all data warehouse system and other applications. 

The incumbent will play the role of centralized communications to business and other IT groups for maintenance, upgrade, and issue resolution of the systems. He or she is also responsible to coordinate with these groups to troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues including defects resolution, security vulnerability, among other issues.

This positon will coordinate other team leads to manage budget activities and contracts.  

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Serves as supervisor of application and operational support staff and contractor resources required to maintain and enhance data analytics and data warehouse and other digital delivery systems that support Publications operations.
  2. Provides hands-on leadership on system design, implementation, and integration of data warehouse and other systems. 
  3. Provides advice on data analytics and business intelligence strategy and technical direction. 
  4. Work with the leadership team to proactively assesses and implements strategic technical direction for the department.
  5. Ensures production system at high availability and high performance.   
  6. Leads troubleshooting and resolving production issues and security related system issues.
  7. Establishes employee performance objectives and conducts reviews. Ensures professional development and career growth of staff. 
  8. Conducts interviews and hires talents to grow a high performance team.
  9. Manages budget activities and contracts. 
     
     
    Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent experience is required.
  • 5+ years management experience required.
  • Publication industry experience and technologies desired.
  • Proven record of leadership in innovation.
  • 7+ years of experience in software development.
  • 5+ years of data analytics and data warehouse experience, including data analytics ETL, data management, and reporting tools.  
  • Cloud technology (AWS, Google Cloud) knowledge and experience a plus. 
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in leading or managing software development and support teams in a large organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnership and motive team. 
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and effective communication skills.
