Division and Unit Overview


The Sales and Marketing Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing sales programs for the ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent in this is analyzing all results and recommending future direction for the marketing and positioning of ACS Publications’ products within the chemical/scientific community marketplace. The Marketing Department is committed to building a better online, purchasing, and reading experience, as well as improving the scholarly research and communications environment for both the customer and the end user. Key constituents include authors, reviewers, ACS members, librarians and purchasers, editors, and the range of end-users (subscribers and non-subscribers).


The Marketing Department is tasked with developing ongoing conversations and strengthening relationships to instigate positive brand recognition, engagement with our products and ultimately increase sales and revenue for an extensive portfolio of journals, eBooks and other digital products. A core group within the Marketing Department are the Marketing Operations and  Journal and Content Marketing Groups, responsible, among other things, for the marketing plans of over 60 journals, the society’s premiere blog ACS Axial (, and the division’s marketing automation system.


Position Summary

The Senior Marketing Content Manager is responsible for leading the ACS Axial blog, providing advice and oversight for web platforms including the Open Science website, the Solutions Center, the Publishing Center, and the Events Hub, and leading the written style for marketing. Responsibilities include developing and writing content, assessing opportunities for improvements to the content, along with the analysis of results and stakeholder feedback. In addition, this role synthesizes the written style for marketing in conjunction with the CreativeLab. The position works within a team environment to collectively achieve the goal of expanding the overall market influence of ACS Journals and Products, and positioning and measuring the brand. Position reports to the Assistant Director, Marketing Operations. 

Position Accountabilities

Take primary responsibility for the ACS Axial blog while acting in an advisory role for a portfolio of ACS Publications information websites, providing general oversight of content and assisting with updates as needed in coordination with stakeholders, and managing the writer style guide for marketing.


  • Lead content marketing efforts including the ACS Axial blog with the goal of increasing usage and optimizing traffic driven to Publications platform via the continued development of high-quality content in a variety of media formats, while employing strategies and techniques to maximize discoverability through advertising and SEO. Position should provide regular analyses of Axial performance to management and peers. 
  • Develop consistency in written style across Publications marketing through development of the written style guide. Coordinate across the teams an effort to harmonize the written style and to shape how ACS Publications marketing presents to external user communities. Partner with different departments and divisions at ACS to unify marketing messaging and brand while amplifying audience engagement for the society at large.
  • Provide oversight and advice regarding content for a portfolio of websites including the ACS Open Science website, the Publishing Center, the Solutions Center, and the new Events Hub. Analyze and make recommendations to stakeholders to grow usage and increase discoverability through improvements and SEO. Communicate results internally and cross divisionally. Efforts to support this portfolio of websites should not encompass more than 20% of an average workweek.
  • Deliver plans for persona-based nurture campaigns in collaboration with lead marketing managers within ACS Publications. Support major Marketing campaigns as a member of the CreativeLab team, and produce a holistic marketing plan for the ACS Axial website to promote use reengagement, lead generation and downstream conversions.
  • Working with CreativeLab, spearhead an iterative brand initiative to continually measure and improve brand perception in the marketplace. As part of above, engage key audiences in regular brand evaluation activity.
  • Attend relevant conferences or events to stay current on trends in content marketing.


Position Summary

  • College degree (relevant field) or equivalent experience; usually has an advanced degree (relevant field) or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of related experience. Experience in STM institutional marketing as well as international marketing experience strongly preferred.


This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS offers hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
