Division and Unit Overview
 

The Marketing, Sales and New Product Innovation Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing sales programs for the ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent to this is analyzing all results and recommending future direction for the marketing and positioning of ACS Publications’ products within the chemical/scientific community marketplace. The Marketing Department is committed to building a better online, purchasing, and reading experience, as well as improving the scholarly research and communications environment for both the institutional customer and the end user. Key constituents include academic librarian administrators, researchers, authors, reviewers, ACS members, editors, and the range of end-users (subscribers and non-subscribers).

 

A critical function of the Marketing Department is a strategic outreach program that fosters communication and nurtures relationships with many of these key constituents. With an extensive portfolio of journals, eBooks, digital training products, and institutional open access publishing programs, the Marketing Department is tasked with developing ongoing conversations and strengthening relationships to instigate positive brand recognition and ultimately increase sales and revenue. With a truly global research community as its audience, ACS Publications has a growing need to expand its footprint and influence, both on a global and regional level.

 

Position Summary

 

The Senior Marketing Manager, Institutional Partnerships is responsible for developing the strategic direction and leading communications, marketing and outreach efforts to strengthen our relationship with our institutional partners, to educate the community on our open science initiatives, to engage our key stakeholders on our position in the open science/open access landscape as a key publishing player, and to engage current and prospective institutional buyers of open access transformative publishing agreements. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Academic Relations, the incumbent will work closely with sales colleagues and marketing colleagues to develop, lead and execute a variety of programs driving the adoption and usage of open access, transformative, Read + Publish Agreements globally. The incumbent will also be tasked with strategizing new tactics to achieve the overall objective of strengthening relationships with the academic market, driving engagement with key outreach initiatives and homegrown products/platforms, positioning ACS as a leader in the scholarly open access publishing movement, supporting transformative agreement renewals and driving new revenue.

 

As institutionally-supported open access publishing models become an increasingly critical part of ACS’ business model, it is important to communicate the benefits and processes of ACS’s open access initiatives. The Senior Marketing Manager will execute a number of pre-sales marketing and communications plans designed to communicate the value propositions of ACS’s open access programs to both institutional buyers, administrators, and authors. The candidate will also be responsible for developing and executing post-sales communications plans and programs, designed to support institutional agreement administrators and promote the usage of open access agreements by institutional users.

 

An equally important focus for this role involves building loyalty around - and facilitating the transition to - an open science ecosystem, raising awareness of ACS open science programs such as ChemRxiv, Figshare, SciMeetings and emerging research data support services. Accordingly, the incumbent will work closely and cross-functionally with a number of internal stakeholders to execute on this objective.

 

Work design: The Senior Marketing Manager, Institutional Partnerships will operate under the guidance of the Marketing Leadership team leveraging the full resources of the ACS Publications marketing organization including the Design and Brand Studio, product marketing managers, journals marketing associates, editorial colleagues, as well as other key stakeholders.

 

They will work under general managerial direction on goals and objectives that have a significant impact on the organization, executing unit objectives with expert knowledge as guidance. The incumbent is expected to independently develop and deliver systemic solutions for highly complex problems using marketing best practices such as direct email marketing, social media and online advertising, webinars, academic conference session attendance and content strategy. They will serve as the functional expert in open science and open access across the organization, and provides insight and oversight to colleagues regarding the various open science and open access initiatives happening throughout the organization.

 

Position Accountabilities

 

  1. Successfully design and implement ACS’s open science and open access strategies. Market the various open access options available to ACS Publications institutional customers and their users. These programs include, but are not limited to ChemRxiv, SciMeetings, Figshare and ACS Read + Publish Agreements.
  2. Independently develop high-quality print and digital resources (e.g. infographics, explainer videos, powerpoint presentations, sales brochures, blog content, social media post, administrator toolkits, overview webinars) to promote open access publishing programs and drive usage of programs by open access authors.
  3. Serve as a key strategic architect and content creator for the ACS Open Science website,
  4. Plan and execute multiple marketing plans to address various aspects of open science and open access programs at ACS, including a highly engaging, multi-channel communications plan for Open Access week each year.
  5. Secure opportunities for ACS open science and open access subject matter experts and key customer advocates to present thought leadership in ACS Publications-sponsored webinars and at external academic conferences.
  6. Work with the Marketing Manager, Researcher Services, as well as Sales Operations and Editorial Operations staff to effectively communicate the Journal Publishing Agreement (JPA), JPA Wizard, CCC, and other operational elements that streamline the OA submission, acceptance and redemption process.
  7. Work with the Media & Audience Development Manager, as well as colleagues in Editorial and OA-specific roles to roll out communications and positioning for industry-wide initiatives that impact ACS Publications’ OA platform and business model.

 

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, marketing, journalism or related area, or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years of related experience, including experience working closely with sales teams
  • Strategic understanding of institutional open access transformative publishing agreements required
  • Thorough understanding and high-level execution of strategic development and writing skills, along with marketing plan execution
  • Knowledge of print and electronic information products
  • Experience delivering public, informational webinars
  • Expert MS Office skills (spreadsheets, word processing and database applications)
  • Expert skills with marketing automation systems (i.e. Eloqua)
  • Strong digital marketing skills (direct email and social media copywriting)
  • Strong Wordpress website management and analytics skills
  • Experience with a STM or business publisher is preferred
