Position Summary
We are searching for a new teammate with data and research experience that can help us tackle high-level research questions and challenges to support our mission to grow and improve our suite of top-tier chemistry journals and the experience of all the researchers that read and publish in them. While the projects our new teammate will work on will vary in topic, we are looking for someone with a particular passion for studying and increasing diversity and representation among all the groups that contribute to and benefit from our journals.
Division and Unit Overview
The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific membership association, with a mission to “advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people”.
ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society’s programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 75+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high quality products and services of benefit to the global community.
The Journals Publishing Group encompasses four major business units: Editorial Development focuses on the effective operations and strategic expansion of the suite of ACS Publications’ journals, both hybrid and open access titles. Editorial Development provides strategic guidance to ACS Editors-in-Chief to maximize the impact and success of the journals. Global Editorial Operations primarily focuses on the overall operations related to more than 800 journal editors and their editorial offices. This group oversees the effective implementation of the entire peer review process and is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to ensure this core competency upholds the quality and integrity standards expected of ACS journals. Global Production Operations ensures that accepted articles are edited and produced in a manner consistent with high editorial standards, outstanding customer service, and with cost and operational efficiency in mind. Editorial Business Intelligence & Analytics (EBI&A) focuses on sourcing and utilizing data, metrics, and quantitative analysis to provide insights into the performance of, resource needed for, and opportunities to grow ACS Publications portfolio of category-leading journals.
The EBI&A team is responsible for the collection, maintenance, analysis, and reporting of detailed editorial data during the peer-review process and post-publication.
Position Overview
The Senior Portfolio Analyst is responsible for the reporting and analysis of editorial data to ensure the success of the overall journal program in a data-driven environment. They will work closely with other Journal Publications Group staff to identify innovative data-driven solutions to the evolving portfolio’s needs, while monitoring portfolio performance on an ongoing basis. Responsibilities include data collection, analysis, and reporting to internal stakeholders on existing product performance, conducting market research and development of new journal and closely related product opportunities, and leading development efforts around data reliability and scalability. They will be passionate about data and applying analytical methods to answer critical business questions and make recommendations based on the data at hand. While this position will work on a variety of topics, there will be a particular focus on DEIR data collection, analysis, and experiments around increasing the diversity and representation in scholarly publishing. The incumbent reports to the Assistant Director, Editorial Business Intelligence & Analytics.
Position Accountabilities
1. Ongoing portfolio analysis and performance
- Independently collect, clean, organize, and report on in-depth data and trends, collaborating closely with other analytics teams in the organization as needed. Synthesize and visualize analytic findings for consumption by stakeholders and customers in the form of dashboards, reports, white papers and/or presentations.
- Apply statistical tests and analysis to evaluate data sets and metrics for decision-making suitability and properly frame the results to key stakeholders.
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline and/or extend the capabilities of the EBI&A team to collect or analyze data with scalability, accuracy and data governance in mind.
- Coordinate and distribute detailed monthly and annual reports related to portfolio and market performance.
2. Support the collection and analysis of demographic data
- Represent the EBI&A team on multi-department DEIR working groups, supporting the reporting efforts and design of pilots and initiatives.
- Oversee the collection and analysis of user demographic data for annual reports and special initiatives.
- Evolve existing and create new reporting dashboards as needed.
Qualifications
Required Skills:

- Demonstrated advanced proficiency with common data analytics tools and platforms
- Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, organization, and prioritizing skills
- Strong sense of curiosity, desire to learn and understand, and ability to draw connections between pieces of information.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply basic statistical analyses
- Proficiency with data visualization to present complex data in the simplest, accurate manner possible
- Self-awareness to understand knowledge gaps, acknowledge and learn from mistakes, and ability to ask questions
- Ability to interpret data, analyze trends, and provide insights to stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to communicate with colleagues in the most effective manner in written and spoken interactions; ability to flex communication style depending on the situation
Desirable Skills:
- A working knowledge of SQL
- Working knowledge of advanced statistical analyses
- Experience working with common scientific literature databases (e.g., SciFinder, Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, etc.)
- Experience with building and maintaining Tableau dashboards
- Knowledge of the scholarly publishing landscape and peer-review process
- Experience in working with DEIR and demographic data
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of related experience in an academic or business setting; advanced degree in Mathematics or Science are preferred
Position location: ACS Headquarters in Washington, DC or offices in Columbus, OH, or in Oxford, UK.
ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
