Position Summary
The Senior Manager, General Accounting reports to the Director, Financial Reporting & Accounting Services, and oversees the day-to day activities of an accounting team that is responsible for all corporate general ledger accounting, including pledges, endowments, grants & awards, insurance and pension plans, investments, debt, and net assets.  This role will be a thought leader and mentor and help identify best practices for month end close, internal controls and all general accounting matters.


Position Accountabilities


  1. Lead and manage members of the accounting team which includes setting expectations, providing feedback, managing workload, ensuring consistent response times and delivery of results.
  2. Work cross-functionally with FP&A, Office of Philanthropy, Society Programs, Information Services, IT, and other functions
  3. Drive the month-end close process, partner with the IT Support team to automate processes, and drive towards a streamlined close
  4. Ensure monthly close is being managed accurately, timely and effectively with appropriate variance analysis and explanations.
  5. Review account reconciliations monthly and ensure any adjustments are booked timely
  6. Maintain the Society’s chart of accounts
  7. Assist with preparation of financial information for the annual report, annual financial statements, and tax returns.
  8. Proactively identify and remediate issues while implementing process improvements to streamline accounting processes
  9. Maintain and enhance an environment of accountability and professionalism


Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related: CPA license required; advanced degree a plus
  • Minimum eight years of experience in accounting role; non-profit and public accounting experience is a plus
  • Understanding of GAAP
  • Demonstrated management, supervisory and/or team leadership experience required.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience with large ERP systems, ideally PeopleSoft financials
  • Experience with Blackline for task management and account reconciliations preferred
  • Experience in participating in year-end financial audits
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
