Division and Unit Overview

The mission of the ACS Education Division is to serve learners and educators by building communities and supporting innovative, relevant, and effective chemistry education and professional development. The strategic objectives of the ACS Education Division reflect the responsiveness of the Division in fulfilling the vision, mission, and values of ACS and meeting the needs of the changing chemistry enterprise. The Education Web team serves the entire Education Division, by reviewing and approving all education content on ACS.org. This includes text changes, video, audio and image uploads, editing all the above for clarity, appropriateness and tone. The team helps internal stakeholders develop new web pages and execute redesigns for existing web pages, to communicate the myriad opportunities, benefits and resources offered via the Education division’s programs, products and services.


Position Summary

The candidate will be responsible for reviewing content submitted by several education contributors. They will be responsible for updating the education homepage and second level transition pages regularly. The candidate will also maintain and update the education division’s intranet page, perform an annual audit and offer recommendations for improvements. They will serve as the education representative at intranet meetings. The candidate will serve as a backup editor for the Chemunity News e-Newsletter. The candidate will actively be involved with identifying areas of improvement across Education-related web pages, and using web best practices, including content inventories and ROT analysis (Redundant, Outdated, Trivial) to offer recommendations to internal stakeholder and execute the improvements. The candidate will also help address ad hoc content and web page requests submitted to the team. They will assist with the review of content inventories, content entering, quality control and strategy for web site redesigns and migrations.


Work design: Works with team, independently, and under general direction from manager and in collaboration with the Education division business units, education web team and Web Strategy and Operations. Creative, strategic, collaborative, flexible, adaptable, and political approaches are essential in this position. The candidate will not only be working with stakeholders in the Education division but working closely with other divisions in communications and marketing for cross-divisional projects. 


Position Accountabilities

  1. Review content contributed to the education inbox from several education content management system users.
  2. Identifies areas of improvement on education web pages (look, appropriateness, accuracy, tone, SEO, calls to action, user experience, accessibility).
  3. Makes recommendations to education stakeholders on how to improve web pages based on best web practices and user experience. Participate in frequent content strategy discussions.
  4. Update content on the education homepage and second level transition pages.
  5. Update and maintain the education intranet webpages, perform annual audit, provide recommendations to improve the user experience.  
  6. Helps with large scale content entering for new websites and web site migrations into the content management system.
  7. Responds to requests from stakeholders needing help with updates to webpages, creating new pages, while working closely with the Web Strategy and Operations team to complete the work.
  8. Participates in development of user testing activities (in-person and online), surveys and other forms of research to assess usability, user satisfaction for Education web sites and pages. 


Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related science, or equivalent experience, required. This position requires 2-3 years of experience editing content in a content management system (Adobe Experience Manager Preferred); experience working in an agile project management environment is helpful. Must have a basic understanding of user experience and content strategy for the web. Candidates must be detail-oriented and able to quickly spot and correct inconsistencies with content submissions (incorrect formatting, file sizes, spelling and grammatical errors). Other necessities include the ability to thrive in a team environment while also being able to work independently; strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, clear and concise writing and presentation skills. Cultural/global awareness and experience is highly desirable.
